Elizabeth Kendal, daughter of James Kendel and Elizabeth McKee Kendel, was born 7 Aug 1877.
James was a coal miner. and they lived in Downs Lane, Hetton-le-hole.
Elizabeth married 29 Aug 1903. At that time her address was 26 William Street, Downs.
James Gildroy Kendal was the son of Joseph and Isabella Gildroy Kendel, and was born 20 No 1844. Park House Pit. Father was a "pitman".
What does that mean?
When James died, 17 Oc 1902, his son, Joseph was in attendance.
James married Elizabeth McKee, daughter of John and Helen Russel McKee. She was born 26 April 1846. The occupation of John was "Gunner R.A" and they lived at 8 Soldier's Colltages, Charlton.
This must indicate he was in the military? Can someone help me with more information regarding this location (Charlton) and does R.A. stand for Royal Army?

A 'pitman' is/was a miner, a man who worked in the pit (another name for a coal mine).
R.A. stands for Royal Artillery, a regiment of the British Army.

"Pitman" indicates that he worked in a coalmine ( shorted to "Pit" ie a hole in the ground.
One meaning of R.A. is "Royal Artillery"
Hope this helps

I have Hannah Charlton b about 1825 married William Hall before 1855 Durham. Son Thomas Hall born 1855 Thornley /Tow Law, Wolsingham. Other sons George who worked for a railway. Robert wherabouts unknown. Thomas married Chester le Street 1880 to Margaret Pickup. William Irving AKA Irvine died in a mining accident. William Sr or his father owned or operated a general store, grocer?
William and Hannach moved from Thornely after 1855 possible to Chester le Street as Willima Sr reportedly danced at Lumley Castle.
Thanks from Michigan
