Dove, maybe Lagan and McKenna

Hello,
My great Grandfather Hugh Dove was listed in the 1881 census, in Monk Hesledon, Durham, as having been born in Newcastle, Northumberland. His wife Mary Ann is listed as widow in 1891 census, in Castle Eden Colliery.
Their first child (that I know of) was born in 1868, their last child was born in January 1888. Assuming that these records are accurate, Hugh was born about 1844, married between 1860 and 1870, and died between March 1887 and 1891. The family sailed to the USA in 1893.
So far I've read through all the Doves, and similar names in the British Registraion Index for his birth, marriage, and death in all the relevant years, plus or minus 5 years, and there are no records of a Hugh Dove at all.
I am still unfamiliar with England's genealogy. If anyone has suggestions of things to do next, please email me at d_j_salvia@yahoo.com
Thanks you,
David Salvia
