Dorothy,
This is probably a little help to you. I have an index to the 1851 Census for South Tyneside, which includes South Shields, Boldon, Westoe, Cleadon,St Hilda, Harton, East Boldon, Union Workshouse, Harton Colliery, Whitburn, East Jarrow(part) and West Harton.
It is just an index, but I did find George LASHLEY, aged 42 and Alioce LASHLEY, aged 38. They had the following children at that time:
William LASHLEY, aged 16
Margaret LASHLEY aged 12
Isaac LASHLEY, aged 8
Hannah LASHLEY,aged 6
George LASHLEY, aged 6 months.
You can get more detail by looking at the full census return which is HO 107/2399 folio number 371. That would give you places of birth, occupation etc., which the index doesn't give.
