My gggrandfather was John Steel (joiner) who listed his residence as Crookham when he was informant of the 1846 birth registration of his son Thomas (b 2 Jul 1846 in Milfield) and on the death registration of his wife Ann (Tarbit) Steel who died 16 days after the birth of her son.
Young Thomas appears in census records 1851-1881 in the household of Tarbit relatives in Milfield and returned to Milfield after his marriage in Foulden, Berwickshire, SCT, in 1882. He married Margaret Steel who is found on 1881 census working in Milfield - Foulden was the residence of her parents, John & Christina (Gray) Chirnside. One of the witnesses at the wedding was a JOHN STEEL - a relative of Thomas' one would guess, but haven't a clue what the link was!
