My great-great-grandfather was Joseph FLORANCE born in Portland, Dorset in 1842. His father was Thomas FLORANCE, but more information than that I do not know. Joseph was a soldier with the 77th Regiment and was stationed at the Verne. He was married to Elizabeth NOSTER in 1873 and had 3 children: Margaret Elizabeth (b 1873); Joseph (b 1880) and Frederick Mitchell (b 1883). If anyone has any information that might help me tracing his line further back, I would be most grateful. None of the family appear on the 1881 census.
